Double stroller width against a 32 inch door

Four of the eight strollers below are sold with a promise that they fit through a standard doorway. Bugaboo says the Donkey 5 "in side-by-side mode is only 5.5 inches wider than a single stroller, designed to comfortably fit through standard doorways and elevators." Baby Jogger says the City Mini GT2 Double "fits through any standard doorway." Joovy says the Scooter X2 "fits easily through standard doors." BOB says the Revolution Flex 3.0 Duallie "fits through standard doorways," on its own buying guide rather than the product page.

Not one of them says how wide a standard doorway is. That turns out to be because nobody publishes it.

Where 32 inches comes from

There are two authoritative 32 inch figures in American building rules, and neither one is about the door between your living room and your hallway.

The first is accessibility. ADA Standards for Accessible Design 404.2.3 requires that "Door openings shall provide a clear width of 32 inches (815 mm) minimum," measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees. The same section raises that to 36 inches where the opening is more than 24 inches deep. This governs accessible routes in covered buildings, not private homes.

The second is egress. IRC R311.2, in the form adopted by North Carolina, requires the exterior egress door of a dwelling to "provide a clear width of not less than 32 inches (813 mm)." That is one specific door — the way out — and the code sets no equivalent minimum for interior passage doors.

For the door into a bedroom or a bathroom in an existing house, no building code, federal standard or national standards body publishes a typical width. The 28, 30 and 32 inch figures that circulate online come from retailer catalogues and contractor blogs. They may well describe most houses. They are not a published standard, and a maker who says "standard doorway" is not pointing at one.

What the strollers actually declare

Sorted by width, the side-by-side group is remarkably tight. Bugaboo declares 29.1 in, Baby Jogger 29.25 in, Joovy 30 in, BOB 30.5 in. Four brands, four price positions, four different frames, and the entire spread is under an inch and a half.

Against a 32 inch clear opening every one of them goes through. Against a 30 inch opening, which is common in older housing but not documented anywhere authoritative, two of the four do not. The same widths decide a different question at a theme park gate, where Disney publishes a limit of its own that is narrower than the door standard — none of these strollers fails that one either.

The one number anybody publishes

Thule is the exception, and it is a strange one. The Urban Glide 3 Double has no published unfolded width or length at all. What Thule does publish is a spec line called door pass through, at 31.5 in.

That is the only figure any of these eight makers publishes that answers the doorway question directly rather than gesturing at it. It is also the widest number in this comparison, and it comes with no overall width to sanity-check it against. Thule is simultaneously the most useful and the least complete of the eight.

Tandems make the problem disappear

Put two children in a line instead of side by side and the width question stops mattering.

The Chicco BravoFor2 is 23.3 in wide. The Contours Legacy is 24.25 in. The Mockingbird is 25.5 in. All three are narrower than most single strollers were a decade ago, and all three would clear a doorway well under any of the widths people repeat online.

The cost is length. The BravoFor2 is 45.0 in front to back and the Legacy is 46 in, against 33.5 in for the Bugaboo in its shortest handlebar position. A tandem does not fight doorways; it fights turning circles, checkout lanes and the space behind a dining chair.

Two of these three also stop publishing at exactly the wrong moment. Contours gives one set of dimensions for the Legacy without saying whether they describe single or double mode. Mockingbird publishes 25.5 in for the stroller and no width for double mode. Both are convertibles, so the configuration you would actually push through the door is the one with no number attached to it.

The eight, one by one

How to use this

Measure your narrowest doorway, at the opening rather than the frame, with the door standing open. That single measurement replaces every marketing claim on this page.

Then compare it to the width the maker publishes, not to the phrase standard doorway. Four brands here declare a width between 29.1 in and 30.5 in, and each of those numbers is checkable. Thule's 31.5 in answers the question directly but leaves you without an overall width. Contours and Mockingbird both stop publishing at double mode, which is the mode that matters.

If your doorways are tight, or you have not measured them yet, the tandems remove the question entirely at 23.3 in to 25.5 in. Length becomes the constraint instead, and a 46 in stroller has its own opinions about your hallway.
